Spring Breakers Hollywood Premiere & Review

I have been going on and on about the Spring Breakers Hollywood Premiere for like a week now.

Rachel Korine - Spring Breakers Hollywood Premiere

Well, this will probably be my last post on the subject, and there are a couple girls in the movie that I haven’t gotten to yet. 🙂

The director’s wife Rachel Korine was, surprisingly, a highlight of the film for me.

The fact that she was topless didn’t hurt any. xD

Heather Morris - Spring Breakers Hollywood Premiere

Oh, and Heather Morris and her former roommate Ash Lendzion were in it too.

As for the actual film, I went to see it on Saturday and it is an interesting movie, to say the least. It was structured like an art film with a lot of layers and the editing really seemed to be a big part of how the story was told. Harmony included a lot of scenes and details that would forshaddow future events, and then he would cut back to those moments later in the film – I assume to make sure you didn’t miss them. He would also show glimpses of things about to happen and cut together various scenes with one common point. Which is a long way of saying that the movie was a lot more complex than I had expected.

But storytelling aside, the actual plot and events were fairly simple… Girls rob a restaurant, go to Florida, party too hard and get arrested, get bailed out by gangster, Selena’s character freaks out and leaves (I hate seeing Selena cry, and OMG, was that one hell of a hard scene to watch), Rachel’s character gets shot then freaks and leaves, and Ashley & Vanessa’s characters, well, “bad ass in a bikini” sounds just about right.

As a Selena fan, I was pleased to get to see her in something different than her usual roles. Faith never did much more than drink and smoke, so this really wasn’t much of a departure for her. Vanessa was quite the bad ass in 2011’s “Sucker Punch” so “Candy” wasn’t much of a stretch. It was Ashley Benson that really surprised and impressed me. In one week she went from “Hanna” in the season finale of Pretty Little Liars” to this total bad ass “Brit” in “Spring Breakers.” Overall, I still recommend the film, but be sure to keep an open mind, it’s probably now what you were expecting.

  1. Saw the movie friday, a great disappointment, the girls were great but the director, producer, editor, should all find different jobs, this was like a music video, where the camera angle changed so quickly , you never get to see anything and be unable to focus your eyes on anything, then the poor lighting, and lighting effects was problematic, it destroyed the the view of the girls itself. ,

  2. Am I the only one who thinks Harmony Korine is a scumbag? I mean he got his own wife to be in this trashy movie and to go topless in it. No real man would do that. He had no problem exploiting a couple of young former disney girls for the shock value. All that mattered to him was money. Someone a little more racist than myself might say he’s a typical money hungry jew.

  3. Chris,

I totally agree with you about Harmony Korine. I will also throw in pedophile and if you read his history you will understand why since all of this films have been about young people and violence. He married this girl Rachel when she was only 20 and he was 34. It was obviously a marriage of convenience as Rachel probably thought marrying a filmmaker would allow her to break into the business easier. I also agree with you that having her run around topless in the movie is pretty sick. It’s like he wants to show her off or something. No matter how you look at it this Dude Korine is totally f*cked up and I won’t be wasting my time or money on his piece of garbage film.

The ONLY reason this film is attracting attention is because of Selena who seems to be getting top billing for it even though her character is only in half the movie.

  4. If I were married to a girl that looked smokin’ hot in a bikini and I was a movie director I would want to show off my wife too. Just saying.

  5. Hard, to believe Rachel Korine will be 27 on April 4th. Doesn’t look nearly that old. She’s got one of those faces that makes you think you recognize her, but…

And Greg, I got tired of the rapid cuts pretty quickly, but I thought the no linear story telling made it more interesting, otherwise I think it would have been just your average teen sexplotation movie. And the Franco sandwich in the pool was a lot more ‘raw’ then I’d expected from Vanessa and Ashley.

Did you see Sel on Leno? She basically said her mother wanted her to do the movie becase she’s a big Harmony Korine fan.

  6. Greg– are you seriously going to leave Chris’ anti-Semitic bullshit comment on here? That’s horrendously offensive.

    Chris, you’re an *******.

  7. First Chris that was offensive. Your whole comment didn’t make any sense anyway. These girls are actresses…sometimes roles call for you to be topless. It does not mean the. Girl is slutty or the director is slime. Filmmaking is art and sometimes the scene calls for nudity & sometimes not. Almost all actress at some point do nudity. Selena gomez will probably one day do it to. If Helen mirren can do it yo damn well better believe some Disney actresses who have done nothing in show business yet is not above it in the future. The director had his wife do it cause the scene called for it. Simple as that.

  8. I know we are all fans of these actresses on Disney channel & nickelodeon but let’s not forget they are just a small part of the larger entertainment universe. Sooner or later these girls are going to have to transform from child actress to full grown adult actresses to be taken seriously and that means taking ever more adult roles to be. Seen as grown up not children if they want to be successful after Disney. Most Disney and nick child stars will fade away cause they can’t or won’t transition to the next level of adult material

  9. Chris is entitled to his opinion. And he did also the “some might say” trick to say something without actually saying it. I don’t see any problem with letting him be heard. And anyone who disagrees is entitled to speak their piece (respectfully) as well.

  10. I don’t normally post in the comments section of here, but some of the debates that come up are interesting

@Chris, I think one of the things to consider here is that for some actresses, nudity is not seen as that big of an issue, look at Kate Winslet or for a younger actress, Juno Temple. Both have featured in many nude scenes which they felt were intrinsic to the role, and there is absolutely nothing to say that Rachel Korine did not feel the same way. Fair enough if you feel that it is not right, and if he did force his wife to do so, then that is undoubtedly wrong of it, but it is unfair to project your views onto Mrs. Korine and assume that she was in any way forced beyond her will. As for the ‘exploitation’ of other girls, lets be fair, they are not exactly in a position where they needed to take the role. All three are successful and experienced actresses for their ages and could have easily continued a career in cinema/tv without doing this film, so ultimately, they chose to do the film, there’s only so far you can say exploitation happened. Obviously he will want them to be in his film as it is free publicity, but in all fairness, the three actresses, particularly Selena Gomez were in a better place in their careers than he was when this started production, I don’t really believe that they have been exploited.

@arwin, pedophile is taking it a bit far. Unless you pervert the meaning of the word, it still means sexualisation of minors, and realistically, Kids is the only film that even crosses that line. And yes, Kids is a very controversial subject matter, but controversial and outright pedophilia are two very different things. Would you consider Scorsese to be a pedophile because Taxi Driver features Jodie Foster playing and underage prostitute. The mere idea of underage sex in a film does not make it pedophilia, I think there has to be an extent of glorification of it to achieve that classification, which Kids does not, it merely admits its existence. As for violence, which is in no way pedophilia, I think it is his perogative to portray controversial subject matter, and that isn’t inherently wrong, though he does sometimes cross the line.

Is he the best film maker in the world, absolutely not. Is he a pedophile, who knows? There’s nothing to say he isn’t, nor is there anything to say he is. Do his works suggest he is a exploitative pedophile, absolutely not.

  11. The director does seem a bit out there and greedy. But how does marrying a 20 year old make him a pedophile? She is older the 17. So he isn’t a pedophile

  12. sammantha,

There is some information out there that suggests he met her when she was 16 and that would have made him 30.

  13. just fyi,

a pedophile is someone sexually interested in children (13 & under). The proper word for someone sexually attracted to teens 15-19 is ephebophile.

Also, 16 is the legal age in many states and several European countries. A hundred years ago, marrying a 16 yr-old girl was actually common in America. It’s only within the last two decades that people have started jumping on using the word “pedo” for everything.

In the past, underage nudity was acceptable and featured in several films, including Pretty Baby (with a 12-yr-old Brooke Shields), Blue Lagoon, and Paradise (with Phoebe Cates). Another good example would be Thora Birch in American Beauty who was only 16 when she filmed her topless scene.

It’s completely legal to film or photograph underage nudity, just not in a sexual context. However, prudish Americans have always been under the misconception that nudity will always equal sex.
