New Series: Dog with a Blog

Well, it's official. Disney has picked up the series "Dog with a Blog" staring G. Hannelius for a full season order. Production begins this Summer for a premiere in Fall.

Dog With A Blog

I'm happy for Miss Hannelius, she's been with Disney for a long time (and she's still only 13!) so it's good that she's getting her own show. Still... this whole concept seems a little silly to me. I mean, a talking dog series? Really Disney? Hopefully it will be better than I expect. Disney's full press release follows.
SIT…STAY...SCROLL DOWN. "DOG WITH A BLOG" - ITS TIME HAS COME! Disney Channel, the leading TV network for kids and families, has ordered "Dog With A Blog," a live action comedy series from Emmy-winning producer Michael B. Kaplan. A family sitcom from the pet’s point-of-view, it centers on step-siblings whose parents buy them a dog to encourage them to get along. That happens - to some extent - as brother and sister discover a big secret about their family's latest addition… that the dog can talk AND blog. The series will introduce a talented cast, among them, Disney Channel's next big star: a four year-old, mixed breed named Kuma in the role of Stan, the talking dog with a blog. The announcement was made today by Adam Bonnett, Senior Vice President, Original Programming, Disney Channel. Production on the multi-camera series will begin this June in Hollywood for premiere in fall 2012 on Disney Channel U.S. and soon thereafter on Disney Channels around the world. Starring are: G. Hannelius ("Den Brother," "Good Luck Charlie"), Blake Michael ("Lemonade Mouth"), Francesca Capaldi ("A.N.T. Farm"), Beth Littleford ("I'm in the Band," "Crazy, Stupid Love," "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"), Regan Burns ("Wizards of Waverly Place") and Stephen Full ("I'm in the Band") as the voice of Stan the dog. Kuma is a Husky/Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix who was rescued from a shelter. He is trained by Guin Dill and Steve Solomon of Good Dog Animals, an animal company with over 40 years combined experience in the motion picture and TV industry. Bonnett said, "With our track record of discovering young talent who are 'triple threats,' we launched a nationwide search and our reward is that we found the one dog who could talk, blog and do his own stunts. Working with kids and animals has never been more fun!" In "Dog With A Blog," Tyler and Avery are new step-siblings. Tyler is popular, charismatic and seems to get by solely on his looks, and Avery is smart, socially responsible and despises guys like Tyler. However, the biggest adjustment for the newly blended family comes with their new dog Stan - who talks and blogs. He's smart, a bit of a trouble maker and loves his new family, who must keep his marvelous ability a secret. Stan's canine point of view, whether in the home, in the yard or on his blog, helps the kids navigate both their new sibling situation and ultimately, becomes the tie that binds the family of six (Tyler, Avery, little sister Chloe, Mom, Dad and Stan). Even though he talks and likes a lot of "human" things, Stan is still pure dog. He chases his tail, barks at mailmen, ardently approaches poodles and is not so wild about cats. "Dog With A Blog" was created and executive-produced by Michael B. Kaplan who most recently created and executive-produced Disney XD's "I'm in the Band." His credits also include "Frasier" for which he received an Emmy Award, "Roseanne," "Girlfriends" for which he received a BET Comedy Award, and "Doogie Howser, M.D." The pilot was directed by Neal Israel ("Kickin' It," "Zeke and Luther," "Even Stevens") and produced by Leo Clarke ("Pair of Kings"). Disney's policy and core principles help ensure the protection and proper care and treatment of animals that appear in Disney-branded series and movies. Disney Channel is a 24-hour kid-driven, family inclusive television network that taps into the world of kids and families through original series and movies. Currently available on basic cable in over 99 million U.S. homes and to millions of other viewers on Disney Channels around the world, Disney Channel is part of the Disney/ABC Television Group.

Article: Phineas & Ferb to Replace Kim Possible at Epcot

Well... as the world's biggest Kim Possible fan (and that's not like the Selena's my wife thing, I really mean that) this really bothers me. Although the fact that it's going to be replaced with Phineas & Ferb does soften the blow a little. A little.
To the delight of kids and probably some parents planning a vacation to the Disney World resort in Orlando, Fla., the recent announcement on the official Disney blog that old "Kim Possible" interactive game at Epcot will be replaced with Agent P's World Showcase Adventure adds one more thing on the to-do list. As the Orlando Sentinel reports, visitors will become secret agents to help the "Phineas & Ferb" character defeat his archenemy Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Families with kids that adore the series will probably enjoy an afternoon helping the platypus out. Why the change? As InsidetheMagic.net reports, the change was pretty much necessitated by the fact "Kim Possible" had not been on the air for a while. For Disney, capitalizing on the popularity of a current show like "Phineas & Ferb" is a great way to get kids excited to explore World Showcase, which can be a chore for any parent. Where do you sign up to play? While specifics have not really been laid down yet, if the current game is replaced with the new one the Disney website states Innoventions, the Odyssey Bridge, the entrance to World Showcase and several other kiosks were equipped for Kim Possible, which means they could be easily converted for Agent P. How much does the game cost to play? The Disney website indicates the game is included with park admission; however, players should be prepared to leave credit card information for the secret agent device that players are issued to experience the interactive elements of the game. Is the game for everyone? As anyone who has played the "Kim Possible" game through can probably attest, visitors looking to buzz through World Showcase should probably avoid the game as some exploration and backtracking is usually required. But players can move at their leisure and play the game at their own pace, which makes it great for younger players. So while not for everyone, the game can provide a nice experience for helping kids look forward to World Showcase a little bit more. Are there any other interactive games available at Disney World? The new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom interactive game was unveiled earlier this year at the Magic Kingdom theme park, as reported by ARGN.com. In that game, which is also included with park admission, players are issued collectible trading cards with spells that aid in the quest to keep the Magic Kingdom safe from a host of Disney villains. Greetings from Epcot! All the would-be secret agents out there will find a great new interactive experience at Epcot this year. Coming this summer, Disney Phineas & Ferb: Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure is based on the wily secret-agent alter-ego of Perry the Platypus – faithful pet to the title characters from Disney’s animated series “Phineas & Ferb.” Although just a simple pet to Phineas and Ferb, Perry turns into Agent P in each episode to help stop the misguided plans of his nemesis, Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Epcot guests will transform into secret agents to help Agent P thwart some of Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s most daring plots. Agents will use a “high-tech secret agent device” to receive clues for each case. Solving the clues will take agents to different places throughout seven World Showcase countries at Epcot – Mexico Pavilion, France Pavilion, Germany Pavilion, Norway Pavilion, Japan Pavilion, China Pavilion and the United Kingdom Pavilion. Agents will scour each country for clues, evil “Inators,” and – with a little bit of luck – help Agent P defeat Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Everyone ready to don their fedoras and help Agent P? I can’t wait! Disney Phineas & Ferb: Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure will arrive at Epcot and the current Disney Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure will close in summer.

2012 Upcoming Disney Channel Projects

There are some very interesting new DC projects in two works. Some of which we've discussed before, and others that are being announced for the first time in this press release ahead of Disney’s annual “upfront” presentation to potential advertisers in NYC this week.

Disney Channel March Highlights

Disney Channel also has fast-growing ratings among Kids 2-11, tying for #1 in February for the first time ever, and is within 1% of Nickelodeon for 1Q12. 2011 was the fifth consecutive year a Disney Channel Original Movie was the year's #1 cable TV movie in Total Viewers (the average delivery for the five movies is 12.5 million viewers), and the 10th consecutive year Disney Channel has delivered the #1 original movie telecast among Tweens 9-14. Disney XD has also delivered a rocket-fueled ascent across all targeted demographics, notably delivering an unprecedented 38 consecutive months of year to year gains among Kids 6-11 in primetime, the longest streak of its kind among all kid networks. Disney Junior ratings have grown substantially during the programming block on Disney Channel. The new projects announced today and upcoming programming events presented to sponsors are: DISNEY CHANNEL
We have been hearing rumors of Craig McCracken’s new project for DC for quite some time, as it was hinted at in an earlier press release regarding the renewal of “Fish Hooks” and may signal a return to Animation on DC.

Wander Over Yonder

"WANDER OVER YONDER" -- Emmy-winning producer Craig McCracken, among the most sought-after talent in TV animation, is the creator/executive producer of Disney Channel's upcoming "Wander Over Yonder," an animated comedy series about best friends and epic enemies, set in surreal places across the universe. Wander is an overly-optimistic intergalactic traveler who, along with his loyal but bullish steed, Sylvia, goes from planet to planet helping people to live free and have fun, all against the evil reign of Lord Hater and his army of Watchdogs. The voice cast includes Jack McBrayer ("30 Rock," "Phineas and Ferb"), Keith Ferguson ("Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends") and Tom Kenny ("SpongeBob SquarePants"). McCracken created the Emmy-winning series "The Powerpuff Girls" and produced a feature film based on it. He also created the hit series "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends," which also won him an Emmy Award. Prior to creating his own shows, McCracken directed "Dexter's Laboratory" and worked on a variety of shows for Hanna-Barbera. "Wander Over Yonder" is a production of Disney Television Animation.
An unoriginal title for an unorginal project, but depending on the implementation it could very well work. Ross Lynch has undeniable vocal talent and I could see this project being a hit if promoted right.

Teen Beach Musical

"TEEN BEACH MUSICAL" -- School's out, surf's up and Disney Channel is taking a dip into the teen beach party movie genre with this modern break into song and dance comedy in which surfer girl McKenzie and her boyfriend, Brady, literally go into a classic surf movie musical where it's bikers versus surfers -- and they're in for trouble if they don't back down. While they hatch a plan to get back home to present day, the duo try to blend in as everyone around them spontaneously breaks into song and dance. But when they interfere with the plot of the movie, their fate may be changed forever. It is scheduled to premiere in summer 2013 on Disney Channel. Starring are Ross Lynch ("Austin & Ally"), Maia Mitchell (Australia's "Trapped," "Castaway"), Garrett Clayton, Grace Phipps ("The Nine Lives of Chloe King"), John DeLuca, Chrissie Fit ("General Hospital"), Kevin Chamberlin ("Jessie," Broadway's "The Addams Family") and Steve Valentine ("Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie," Disney XD's "I'm In The Band"). The soundtrack is influenced by surf rock, Motown R&B, rockabilly and comedic pop. "Teen Beach Musical" was written by Vince Marcello and Mark Landry ("Zombie Prom") and Robert Horn ("Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure") and is directed by Jeffrey Hornaday ("Geek Charming," choreographer of "A Chorus Line," "Flashdance") and choreographed by Chris Scott ("Lemonade Mouth"). David Buelow ("Bring It On: Fight to the Finish") is the executive producer and Robert F. Phillips ("Teen Spirit") is the producer. "Teen Beach Musical" is a production of Rainforest Productions, LLC.
Not the most original idea for a Halloween DCOM, but DC does need some new content and Olivia is a good choice. The crossover promotion for DXD along makes it worthwhile.

Olivia Holt

"GIRL VS. MONSTER" (working title) – In a Halloween themed movie to premiere during Disney Channel's second annual month-long Monstober event, Olivia Holt (Disney XD's "Kickin’ It") stars as 15-year-old Skylar Lewis, a savvy teenager who discovers her family's closely-guarded secret -- she's a fifth generation monster hunter. But Skylar doesn't realize there is one immortal monster, Deimata, who wants to unravel her family's secret. In order for Skylar and her friends to stop Deimata and her army of monsters, they’ll need to face their biggest fears and overcome them together. The script was written by Annie DeYoung, Ron McGee and Geoff Rodkey. The director is Stuart Gillard and the executive producer is Sheri Singer.
I don’t like Disney going down the “Reality TV” road. PrankStars was barable because it focused on Disney stars themselves, but this… I dunno.
"CODE 9" – In this unscripted practical joke show for kids and families, a hidden camera, a sense of humor and the help of Hollywood's top special effects artists and designers is all a family needs to pull off a fun prank with their unsuspecting mom or dad. The entire group works together to plan and execute the entertaining prank with one family member going deep undercover with special prosthetic make-up, costumes and other disguises to help pull the whole prank off. Hosted by Wes Dening ("In the Qube"), the series is scheduled to premiere in summer 2012. The executive producers are Mark Herwick ("Launch My Line"), Douglas Ross, Kathleen French, Gregory Stewart and Alex Baskin (each of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills"). "Code 9" is a production of Evolution Media.
We’ve discussed this DCOM before. I remember I was against it, and not just because the title seems like a rip off of Victorious. xD

Let It Shine

"LET IT SHINE" – The premiere of this music-filled Disney Channel Original Movie will be presented FRIDAY, JUNE 15 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT). A modern day story inspired by the ghostwritten love letters of Cyrano de Bergerac, the story is set in the world of hip-hop, rap and gospel music and expresses the importance of staying true to oneself. Starring are Tyler James Williams ("Everybody Hates Chris"), Coco Jones (Radio Disney "N.B.T."), Trevor Jackson, Brandon Mychal Smith (Disney Channel's "So Random!"), Nicole Sullivan, Courtney B. Vance and Dawnn Lewis. It was written by Eric Daniel and Don D. Scott and directed by Paul Hoen. The soundtrack will be released on Walt Disney Records.
And… we’ve discussed this before too. The new cartoon from the Fish Hooks guy.

Gravity Falls

"GRAVITY FALLS" – Premiering in June, this clever, unexpected approach to animated comedy is helmed by its creator, executive-producer/director Alex Hirsch, a 2007 Cal Arts graduate. His college short, "Off the Wall," garnered attention from notable animation blogs Drawn! and Cartoon Brew, as well as Cold Hard Flash. He subsequently worked as a writer/storyboard artist on "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" and developed Disney Channel's "Fish Hooks." He is also the voice of Clamantha on that series. His ingenious new series "Gravity Falls" follows twin brother and sister Dipper and Mabel, whose summer plans are ruined when their parents ship them off to spend the summer with their Great Uncle Stan in the very strange town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. The voice cast is: Jason Ritter ("Parenthood"), Kristen Schaal ("Flight of the Conchords," "Toy Story 3") and Alex Hirsch. It is a production of Disney Television Animation.
This was to be expected… I wonder if they’re doing the Shake it Up tie in again though? They said “talent competition” not “dance competition” so will it be more general this time?

Make Your Mark

"MAKE YOUR MARK" -- Bigger in 2012, with new extensions across multiple Disney platforms, the second annual "Make Your Mark," a talent competition especially for kids and tweens, begins in July with user generated content on DisneyChannel.com. The multi-platform TV, online and radio initiative culminates with a special event telecast in October. Last year's "Make Your Mark: 'Shake It Up' Edition" delivered an average of 12 million Total Viewers in two telecasts and was #1 among Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14 for both programming nights. Article: Ashley Tisdale To Star In CBS Comedy Pilot

Well, this is an interesting bit of news regarding the Tizz that I thought I would share. Ashley had previously been putting together some sort of semi-autobiographical project for ABC... I guess that fell through. It's good to see the networks are still interested in her despite the Hellcats debacle at the CW.
High School Musical alumna Ashley Tisdale has been cast as a lead in CBS’ untitled Louis CK/Spike Feresten multicamera comedy pilot, an ensemble of young people trying to achieve their creative dreams in these tough financial times. Tisdale will play Petra, the beautiful and sarcastic assistant to a vintage clothing designer struggling to carve out her niche in New York. Louis CK and Spike Feresten wrote the pilot, an update of a script the two originally penned 13 years ago. BermanBraun, Universal TV and CBS TV Studios are producing. Earlier this development season, Tisdale was attached to star in and executive produce a semi-autobiographical multicamera comedy at ABC penned by David Holden. Tisdale, repped by CAA and manager Bill Perlman, starred on the CW drama Hellcats last season.

Disney Channel March 2012 Highlights

No Jessie or Good Luck Charlie this month? What a gyp! There’s actually not much of anything new this month… a couple Shake it Ups, Phineas and Ferbs, and So Randoms. Plus one ANT Farm, one Fish Hooks, and three Austin and Allys. They must have something special planned for Friday nights, either that or they’re conceding them to Nickelodeon – just like they did with Saturday nights.

Disney Corporate News: 1Q Profit Climbs 12%

Well, looks like the Parks division and Media Networks division saw good growth in the past quarter.

The Walt Disney Studios

Walt Disney Co.'s (DIS) fiscal first-quarter profit rose a stronger-than-expected 12% as the company's theme-park division benefited from higher spending and attendance. Shares slid 2% to $40.16 after hours as revenue missed expectations. In March, the stock hit its highest level ever at $44.34. Revenue from Disney's television and theme-park businesses continued to drive its top-line growth over the past year, though the contribution from cable-TV juggernaut ESPN suffered in the latest quarter from a basketball strike and the late timing of two college football championships. Studio-entertainment revenue faltered in the latest quarter as strong sales from the "The Lion King" franchise failed to match the revenue generated from DVD and Blu-ray sales of "Toy Story 3" a year earlier. More recently, the company last month moved to expand its international footprint by agreeing to take a controlling interest in UTV Software Communications Ltd. (532619.BY), one of India's largest media and entertainment providers. The deal positioned Disney's India unit as one of the country's largest broadcasters and film studios, producing and distributing at least 20 titles a year. For the quarter ended Dec. 31, Disney reported a profit of $1.46 billion, or 80 cents a share, up from $1.3 billion, or 68 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue edged up 0.6% to $10.78 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting a profit of 71 cents a share on revenue of $11.18 billion. Revenue from the company's media networks--Disney's biggest top-line contributor--rose 2.9%, while profit increased 12%. Its parks-and-resorts business generated 10% more revenue, on higher attendance at domestic properties as well as the Disney Cruise Line, pushing profit up 18%. Revenue from the studio-entertainment business fell 16%, though earnings still climbed 10%. -By Drew FitzGerald, Dow Jones Newswires; 212-416-2909; Andrew.FitzGerald@dowjones.com
