I’ve been meaning to post this article from EW about what would have happened in the second season of 10 Things I Hate About You had ABC Family not canned the show.
For fans of ABC Family’s canceled series 10 Things I Hate About You, the Monday blahs are worse than usual. Where once fans had snappy dialogue, romance, and Ethan Peck to look forward to on Monday evenings, now there is just the empty void left by cancellation.
“I was telling someone it feels kind of like a breakup,” 10 Things creator Carter Covington tells EW.com. “Like you got dumped by this person and you’re like, ‘Wait a second. But we had such a great thing going on. Why would you dump me?’” Before you start writing angry letters to ABC Family, know that Covington doesn’t blame the network. “I know they loved the show,” he says, adding, “I think they were in a difficult, difficult position to try to figure out how to market and bring back one half-hour comedy by itself.”
For those frustrated by the series finale’s many cliffhangers, Covington sends his apologies: “It’s really hard for me because there’s nothing I would wish more than to have been able to have a series finale that really provided some closure for everybody.” Even though that was impossible — production wrapped before the cancellation axe came down — Covington is satisfied with how things ended. “In the life of the series, to me, Kat and Patrick were always going to run off into the sunset together,” he says. “In a way, I’m happy that the series ended where it did because at least they were together.”
But what about all the cliffhangers?! Unfortunately, we’ll never see them play out. Nor will Ethan Peck be piercing through the TV screen every Monday. “I think that might be what my contribution to history is — bringing Ethan Peck into the consciousness of America,” Convington laughs. But we’ve got the next best thing. Covington shared with EW.com what was in store for Kat, Bianca, Patrick, Joey, Cameron, and the rest of Padua High’s student body. Let’s break it down cliffhanger by cliffhanger:
Cliffhanger #1: Walter walks in on Kat and Patrick together in bed. Naked. Surprisingly, the incident wasn’t going to drive a wedge between the couple. Says Covington: “I really wanted to keep Kat and Patrick together as a couple because I think that their struggle to become closer is much more interesting than them being apart. The plan for season two was to have Walter walking in on them up the stakes of that. He was going to demand to meet Patrick’s parents, which was going to introduce his mother and his stepfather and let us get a greater insight into Patrick’s home life, which we were going to keep stressful and not ideal. We introduced that concept in the first 10 and we were going to see why Patrick’s home life is a stressful place for him.
“The idea was Patrick was going to have conflict with Kat. She is this driven girl who wants to go to college and sees herself being successful. And Patrick – we were really going to explore how he’s a guy who’s like, ‘College isn’t in my future. That’s not who I am. I’m not a student. I don’t know what I want to do, but I know I don’t want to go to college.’ Her mission was, ‘Of course you want to go to college. Everyone wants to go to college. And you’re smart.’ She was really going to be sort of pushing him and that was going to turn him off because that’s trying to change him. I think the end of season two was going to sort of end in a place of frustration between the two of them where she’s like, ‘I just want the best for you,’ and he’s like, ‘Who says you know what’s best?’
“We were going to develop a relationship between Walter and Patrick where Walter becomes a father-ish figure to Patrick. He’s never had sons and Patrick doesn’t really have a father. That was going to be a nice thing so that when Kat is on the outs with Patrick, she finds that her father still has this relationship with him. In seeing Patrick’s family and learning more about him, Walter really becomes sympathetic and sees that Patrick really is a good guy who’s had a tough road.”
Cliffhanger #2: Where there’s a happy Kat and Patrick, there’s Blank? Yes, the British thorn in Kat’s side was going to stick around. Covington: “I was excited to explore who his family was. Blank serves as a counterpoint to Patrick because he is ambitious. He wants to go to college. He’s a thinker, not a doer like Patrick. We were going to evolve out that relationship and also show that through Blank and his mother, Kat has this connection to her mother and what she was like, which was going to be just a place for her to find out what her mom was like in a very similar time in her life.” Does that mean we’d see a love triangle? “I’m not sure,” Covington says. “I really liked the actor who played Blank. I liked the idea of Kat struggling with whether or not Patrick can fit into what her goals are in life. I like that idea. As much as everyone hates love triangles, sometimes you have to give that character a choice. Blank was going to be that choice, but we hadn’t really figured out how we were going to do it because I really didn’t want to get into a situation that felt like a predictable love triangle.
Cliffhanger #3: Patrick asks Kat to… What?! Walter chose this opportune moment to walk in on the twosome, so viewers never got to hear what favor Patrick was going to ask for from Kat. So what was he going to say? Covington is hesitant to give an answer, choosing to leave it open to interpretation rather than disappointing people. Then he admits, “We really didn’t know. We were like, ‘We’ll figure that out when we get a season two.’” Fans, are you willing to accept that? No? Didn’t think so. “With the way the season ended now, I would say he says, ‘Don’t break my heart either,’ and she says, ‘OK,’” Covington reveals. “Because that’s how the series should have ended in long-term.”
Cliffhanger #4: Bianca sees Joey kiss another girl on The Biggest Poser. After getting evicted from the Poser house, Joey was going to come back to Padua with a little bit of his spark lost. That would have set the stage for more of an earned Bianca/Cameron/Joey love triangle. While having trouble dealing with the new Joey, Bianca was going to turn to Cameron. “What we always talked about with Bianca was what happens when you’re genuinely in love with two people? That’s really what we wanted to build,” Covington says.
Cliffhanger #5: Chastity transfers to a new school. She was really going to be gone! Dana Davis asked to be relieved from her contract to explore new opportunities. Bianca’s friend Dawn was going to made a series regular to fill the absence.
Covington also reveals that they planned to keep Kat’s Buddhist lifestyle and bring in a friend for her since Jolene Purdy (Mandela) got a role on another series.
PopWatchers, does that make you feel better about the series finale that wasn’t supposed to be a series finale? What do you think about the season two plans? Are you more bummed than ever that you won’t get to see Walter and Patrick bond?

Well, I know I already gave my general thoughts on Camp Rock 2, but I’ve been looking forward to re-watching it and I thought I might as well do another of my trademark play by play commentaries.

On review the opening was a little cheesy. A bit too much on the screaming.
I really enjoy the bus flip scene. Seems kinda expensive for a 30 second stunt, but I’m glad they went for it.
…why are they always like, Mitchie, sing right now for our amusement. Or else.
I think “Brand new day” would be better without the change of tempo. It is a very good plot device though.
Is it wrong that loved seeing Shane/Joe fall off the chicken truck? LOL
Beware of kids chanting “bonfire.” Nothing good can ever come of that.
I was disappointed that Mitchie helped Shane out of the canoe. I wanted to see him fall in.
Are Brown and Connie, like, the only adults at Camp Rock? Connie remembers she’s still married, right?
I do love the Camp Star stage.
Soaking wet Kevin with hot chocolate still cracks me up.
They said “bra” on Disney Channel! *gasp*
“Fire” is one heck of a song. M-dot is a very impressive performer. …Still not a “campfire” though.
The impossible bracelet fling seems even more preposterous the second time. I didn’t realize that was possible!
Dana sure came on kinda strong. And she actually knew they were “forbidden.”
Wow… and I thought that Dana/Nate scene was beyond awkward the first time. LOL
Was Luke hitting on Mitchie? Or was he really all business? :/
A controversial break? Boo. Oh, a Shake It Up promo! Coolness.
And we jump right to sorry camp’s closed? Seems like a rough transition to me. Maybe it was the commercial break.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but “Can’t back down” fits in the story differently than I thought it would. I thought it happened after they challenge Camp Star (“Let’s win this thing”?), but it’s actually in response to Brown’s lack of staff.
“Now get him” – LOL. I loved that part so much more than I should have.
You can spot the councilors by their clipboards because for some reason they lost their fancy hats. :/
The cut to Shane after “buy tighter pants” was just brilliant.
Nate’s a stalker.
Demi should smile more. Or not, I might actually melt if she does it too much.
…am I the only one who thinks that’s a really weird place for a piano?
Nate’s all washed up. But Dana is such a blatant flirt!
So… if a girl tackles you, does that mean she likes you?
Log butt? Wow. Still not funny.
Why did they set up the “Tess has second thoughts” thing when it didn’t really play out?
I didn’t realize how odd the crazy marching thing into Camp Star was the first time.
“It’s On”! About time, I love this song.
Axel sure has good timing. Or maybe he just heard the entire camp(s) singing.
Mitchie seems to realize this TV thing is a mistake. … wait, when did she because official spokesperson for Camp rock?
Caitlyn can all look at a written song for 20 seconds and decide it has great spots for dancing? LOL
You heard it from Brown, talent and commitment are important, but it’s money that makes you look good. So deal with it.
“FOCUSED! … oh sorry.” Chillax girl!
Another commercial. *sips a Dr. Pepper*
And this is when Mitchie totally goes off the deep end.
“There is no F U N in Summer.” “I know” LOL
I love Mitchie’s expression as the water fight breaks out.
You know, those two crazy kids really need to learn how to compromise. Also, if I may, it doesn’t look like Mitchie’s getting much work done now. She might as well have gone on the stupid picnic date.
I love how they end the song looking at each other, they pause for a minute, and then storm off. LOL
So Shane proves how much he cares by completely sacrificing his own position and out Mitchie-ing Mitchie.
“Heart and Soul” – doesn’t suck as much as I would have liked it to.
Mitchie went into Connect 3 fan-girl mode pretty fast there. LOL
Nate really needs to wise up. Or at least say something. “You’re just like every other teenage boy in the world” Yep…
And now for Shane and Mitchie’s totally random romantic monologue. When did she suddenly get all this free time?
LOL @ the horse in the window.
And I love that shot of Nate sneaking into Camp Star.
Anything embarrassing on that list of secrets? I guess we’ll never know.
“Introducing me” is the stupidest song I have ever heard. Okay, maybe not the worst, but it’s in the top ten. The fact that it’s Nick’s song doesn’t make it any better.
Uh oh, Axel caught them! So now nothing will come of it. Wow. LOL
Why take the kids on the spy mission? And why stop and watch in that huge circle of light? :/
And why are they rehearsing the song in the middle of the night? Remember, Camp Rock had already called lights out.
Why are they so excited about it just being Tess and Luke singing? If everyone singing would be better, then why not stick with that? CR’s best act doesn’t depend on what CS does.
I love how the kids are all, “ewww” when Mitchie hugs them! I remember when girls had cooties.
“Thanks, but I’m already booked” – You tell him Brown!
Tess looks so sad. Too bad she’s still one of the bad guys.
I know they’re the the bad guys, but “Tear it Down” is pretty damn awesome. And it’s not just Meaghan.
Poor Tess. She’s so miserable there. But why couldn’t she have figured that out in time to throw the contest?
I don’t know about you, but I think “What we came here for” really is the the perfect song for both the competition and the plot of the movie.
And I liked how they made use of those beach balls.
And now all that’s left is the increasingly rigged voting.
That scene was just so much to take in. They really pulled it off brilliantly. More thoughts on that below.
Mitchie practically pounces on the boy. Not the kiss I originally expected.
Well, the competition is over, so they can finally be themselves. And “This is our Song” actually comes across as the most authentic moment of the movie.
And now it’s a party. Good job everyone to showing up at the same time.
Those really where some pretty impressive bloopers at the end.

Okay, I now think the key to a good movie is no commercials. They give you a chance to think of what’s wrong with the plot. LOL
But on the whole, this movie stood up to a re-watch very well. Better than I expected, in fact. I stand by my earlier rating of 4.5 out of 5; a solid A- and a very high score for a DCOM.
If I may comment on the ending, which was the one thing I was asked not to discuss before, I just wanted to say that I did not expect this ending at all. Traditional wisdom would have our heroes win outright. I thought they might do some sort of backhanded everyone comes together at the last minute cop-out so no one would have to “lose.” I wasn’t alone in that thinking, one girl at the screening commented that they should have become “Camp Rock Star.”
But I never expected that, as director Paul Hoen put it, Camp rock would “win by losing.” In a way, it really put things in perspective. It doesn’t matter what “they” think. Stay true to yourself and your friends and it will all work out. That’s what makes “This is our song” so meaningful.
Also, I thought you would all like to know that cut off the last second or two of the movie. In the cut we saw at the advance screening you could see the rain storm start as the camera finished pulling back.

Only one week to go until the premiere of Camp Rock 2, and I’m sure a lot of you are excited! I would be too, if I hadn’t already seen it.

Anyway, in honor of the upcoming movie, I thought I would share a few promo pics of my girl Meaghan Martin (Tess Tyler) from Camp Rock the first.

Tess was a bit of a weird character in the first movie, but she really comes into her own the sequel.

Click any pic to see the rest of the pics from the photoshoot.

Today I attended a special advance screening of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam The Walt Disney Studios’ Studio Theatre in Burbank, California.

Now, D23′s resident “Disney Geek” and host of today’s festivities specifically asked us not to give away any plot point – particularly the ending. But he did say it was okay to discuss our general feelings on the movie, the songs, and the Q&A session after the film with director Paul Hoen, writer Dan Berendsen, Michael Healy, senior vice president, Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney Channel, and Steven Vincent, vice president, Music and Soundtracks, Disney Channel.

Now that I’ve got that disclaimer out of the way, let me say that Camp Rock 2 was awesome – a huge improvement from the first film. If you read my thoughts about the original Camp Rock, you’ll see that my biggest complaint about the original was the atrocious writing. It was almost as if they wrote the music scenes first and then threw together a few plot points to connect them. That was not the case with camp Rock 2.

As Steven Vincent said about the music, “It was driven by the story .. [we] don’t stop for a song” instead the music moves the story along. In a lot of ways, this film was more musical than the original. It was a full on musical, with a touch of the “Musical about a musical” feel of HSM. Michael Healy said that was a conscious decision to “turn it into a full blown musical” and alluded to a decision as one that made the film less realistic. I can’t really speak to the realism element (I mean, no one ever actually breaks out into song) but I think it was a very good move. The film didn’t have that awkward in between feel of CR1.

As for the overall plot, it’s a very different story than the original. Dan Berendsen explained that “This story is timeless … it’s fighting for something you believe in.” Mitchie is a very different character; she was the outsider before but now she’s a definite leader. If you’ve looked at the soundtrack, you’ll know that Demi has a lot of songs on the soundtrack, and that corresponds to a lot of screen time. Of course, she is the star! Mitchie essentially takes command of Camp Rock following the exodus of most of their staff to Camp Star. The always self-centered Tess Tyler (Meaghan Martin) seemed to learn her lesson from the first movie, but still quickly defected to the other camp thus allowing her to be an antagonist once more. Caitlyn Geller (Alyson Stoner) seemed to have a lot more screen time, although she still didn’t sing much. Joe was actually… dare I say it, kinda good as Shane Gray. The Nate (Nick Jonas) and Dana (Chloe Bridges) subplot was okay; nothing special. Jason (Kevin Jonas) was, as usual, just kinda there. Although there was one good line during the tour bus scene. Maria Canals-Barrera also reprized her role as Mitchie’s mom, but she was hardly even in the film.
Again, I don’t wanna give too much away, but this really is a solid film. Demi gives a very solid performance and the whole team really pulls it together. I give it a 4.5/5, which is among the highest rating I have ever given a DCOM. And what of Camp Rock 3? I think Michael Healy said it best, “Never say never [but] it would be hard to round everybody up.”

But just for fun, I want to share one more though from Senior VP Michael Healy when asked about Disney’s developing talent, he quickly responded “Selena is a fantastic star” then he paused for a moment before continuing, “um, well, Bridgit.” and finally concluding with one final thought, “I wish we had Raven back though.”

PARAMOUNT FINALIZES CAST AND BEGINS PRODUCTION ON MEAN GIRLS 2!
The highly anticipated sequel to the 2004 smash hit Mean Girls is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide in Spring 2011. Principal production for Mean Girls 2 is now underway in Atlanta, Georgia featuring host of fresh young stars. The story revolves around a new high school student, Jo (Meaghan Martin), who agrees to befriend an unpopular girl named Abby (Jennifer Stone) at the urging of Abby’s wealthy father in exchange for paying all of Jo’s costs for the college of her dreams. Jo and Abby team up to take on the school’s mean girls, “The Plastics” (played by Nicole Anderson, Maiara Walsh and Claire Holt). The story becomes a high stakes battle of loyalty that ultimately comes to a head when one of our heroines finds out that her friendship has been bought and paid for. “Mean Girls 2 delivers more of the teen comedy that audiences loved in the original Mean Girls and we’re thrilled to have Melanie Mayron, the talented director and actress, at the helm,” said Louis Feola, President of Paramount Famous Productions. “This brand new story, with our great cast, takes a fresh and funny look at the pressures of high school friendships and the struggle to fit in with a whole new level of contemporary meanness that today’s audience will relate too.”

They also just released a new Friends For Change group picture.

There’s no Miley, no Emily, and no Selena. But they did make sure to include the Disney XD kids. WTF?
Anyway, Disney Press Release Follows:

A Program with Purpose
The aim of this ambitious movement is to empower children to take charge when it comes to the environment, whether it’s their own piece of the planet or a big picture approach.
“With Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green, kids are discovering that helping the planet is easy and fun when they work together and have the right tools,” said Jennifer Anopolsky, senior vice president, Corporate Responsibility, The Walt Disney Company. “In just one year, participation has exceeded our wildest expectations, and we’re building on that momentum by extending Friends for Change to kids in other parts of the world and enhancing the program with fresh new content, local community events, and more grant money that will empower kids with even more ways to get involved.”
Twelve months after the launch of Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green, kids have made nearly two million personal promises to change their daily routines, from unplugging electrical devices when not in use to taking shorter showers.
Kids can also go global with their votes on where to allocate Disney grant money. As a result, one million dollars in grants from Disney are now supporting 25 critical environmental projects around the world.
With the new videos and web content debuting May 30, young people will learn even more ways to recycle, save water, help habitats and reduce energy consumption. They will also have the opportunity to again vote on how another $1 million in grants will support worthy environmental causes throughout the year.
Kids Making a Difference
Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green is setting the pace for environmental initiative. With nearly two million promises, kids have pledged to:
•Cut 70,000 tons of carbon emissions annually
•Reduce/recycle 2.4 million pounds of trash annually
•Save 120 million gallons of water per month
Kids are also learning about the power of their vote. Thanks to their input, Disney has donated more than one million dollars to 25 environmental projects in 15 countries, including:
•$50,000 to the National Resource Council to help fund a forest restoration project in Costa Rica.
•$25,000 to the African Wildlife Foundation to help protect elephant habitats in Zambia.
Kids can turn their own local environmental project into a reality. Disney’s Friends for Change grants, in collaboration with Youth Service America, provide seed money to help get them started. The next call for grant applications opens June 7. To date, these grants have positively influenced nearly 8,000 kids. See http://www.youthserviceamerica.org/grants/programs/friends-for-change for more information.
Kids can also help raise money through iTunes downloads of Disney’s Friends for Change anthems “Send It On” and “Make a Wave.” At last count, nearly 700-thousand dollars, representing 100-percent of download proceeds, have been contributed to the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. •Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green launched last month in Latin America. Kids have already made more than 200,000 promises! European markets are next in line.
