Michael Riley named president of ABC Family

Posted on: Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 in: 10 Things I Hate About You, ABC Family Shows, Disney Channel News, Save Disney Shows

Wow… are we going from bad to worse?

The former president of ABC Family, Paul Lee, was recently promoted to President of ABC after Steve McPherson stepped down last month.

Well, now Disney has announced Lee’s replacement, Michael Riley, formerly of Radio Disney. Disney describes him as a “Respected television and radio executive” but I really don’t know if he’s up to the task of running the continually under-preforming and under-promoted ABC Family channel.

Michael Riley ABC Family

But only time will tell. Disney’s official press release follows:

MICHAEL RILEY NAMED PRESIDENT, ABC FAMILY

Burbank, California, Monday, August 30, 2010 . . . Respected television and radio executive Michael Riley has been named president, ABC Family, it was announced today by Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks & president, Disney/ABC Television Group, to whom he will report.

In this new position, Riley will have oversight of ABC Family’s original programming and acquisitions, franchise management, marketing, sales and operations, and be responsible for the overall strategic and creative direction for the channel.

In making the announcement, Sweeney stated, “Michael’s talent and drive are eclipsed only by the enthusiasm and passion he brings to every opportunity. I’m confident his unique set of skills and experience will help us further ABC Family’s amazing momentum.”

Riley added, “I am extremely proud to have been part of a great team at Radio Disney and very much look forward to joining the incredibly passionate and inventive team at ABC Family. Their success over the past few years has been exceptional, driven by innovative storytelling, unique characters and iconic branding, and I’m honored to be given the opportunity to help build this amazing Millennial brand.”

Coming off its most watched year ever in 2009 and pacing at record levels in 2010, over the past seven years ABC Family has grown its Prime audience by impressive margins, increasing by 76% in Total Viewers (1.4 million vs. 797,000), by 70% in A18-49 (627,000 vs. 368,000) and by 78% in W18-49 (409,000 vs. 230,000). Among the net’s core younger demo sets, the net’s Prime delivery has more than doubled over the past seven years: +115% in A18-34 (348,000 vs. 162,000), +122% in W18-34 (238,000 vs. 107,000), +115% in V12-34 (584,000 vs. 271,000) and +124% in F12-34 (413,000 vs. 184,000).

Prior to this announcement, Riley served as senior vice president and general manager, Radio Disney, where he oversaw the strategic management of the Radio Disney network and its portfolio of 36 owned radio stations, leading them to record ratings through original multi-platform content achievements. He joined The Walt Disney Company in April 2008. An announcement regarding a new general manager for Radio Disney will be made in the near future.

Previously Riley was senior vice president and general manager, Turner Broadcasting System, Europe, Middle East and Africa. In this post he was responsible for developing the CNN commercial strategy and the overall brand strategy for the entertainment channels Cartoon Network, Boomerang, TCM, TNT and Adult Swim in Germany, Northern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Other key responsibilities included the management of advertising sales, marketing and interactive commerce functions, as well as supporting the company’s programming development and acquisition strategy.

From 2004-06 he was vice president and general manager, Turner Broadcasting System France, with responsibility for all Turner channels in that market. From 2000-03, he was vice president, Turner Classic Movies, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and from 1997-2000 he was vice president, Business Development, Television and Interactive Media, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies.

Paul Lee Promoted to President of ABC

ABC Family’s management only gave Ruby 10 episodes and ended 10 Things after only one season. Is this the kind of management Paul Lee will be bringing to the ABC Network?

The 50-year-old, London-born Lee, a former BBC television executive, [and current ABC Family President] will oversee creative and business operations for the broadcast network as well as ABC Studios, the company’s in-house TV production unit. It’s a massive job for the executive, who has spent the last decade keeping a modest profile at mid-size cable channels.

But Disney executives are confident that Lee is up to the task. They point to Lee’s variety of skills, which include producing and directing made-for-TV movies. He worked on spicy telenovelas, a staple of Spanish-language television.

Good Luck Charlie Renewed for Season 2

Good Luck Charlie Cast

In 2Q10, “Good Luck Charlie” ranked as the No. 1 series on television among Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, posting double-digit gains year to year among both demographics and defeating its time period competition by triple digits.

Good Luck Charlie has clearly gotten some pretty impressive ratings, so it’s no surprise that Disney has picked up the show for another season. However, it is a little surprising that they’ve already ordered a movie!

New DCOM: Den Brother

In the movie, 16-year-old hockey star Alex Pearson gets suspended from his team after showboating during a game, and to his dismay, finds himself filling in as a Bumble Bee Troop leader for his little sister Emily’s troop. He must pose as the troop’s elderly den mother from time to time but thinks it’s a small price to pay, especially since he can get Emily and the girls to do his chores and make him snacks in exchange for merit badges. Even more advantageous, Alex has the opportunity to get closer to the beautiful Matisse Burrows, leader of another Bumble Bee Troop. However, when his self-centered antics cost Emily and her friends an opportunity to participate in the long-anticipated Camporee, Alex finally sees how he has affected those he cares about and must devise a plan that will get his troop into the camp.

Shake It Up Episode Filming

Shake It Up

You heard about it here first! Disney Channel’s next live action series (and the replacement for Hannah Montana) began filming in LA last month, and Webmaster Greg has the inside scoop from the filming of the second episode.

In the pilot we are introduced to best friends CeCe Jones (Bella Thorne) and Rocky Blue (Zendaya Coleman). … At school, we meet Deuce (Adam Irigoyen) … [who] also had an important gift for the girls, a flier with the info to audition for a dance show called “Shake it Up Chicago.” Rocky is reluctant, but CeCe insists that they give it a try – it is their dream to be professional dancers after all. … Anyway, CeCe and Rocky audition for the show and through no fault of her own CeCe is eliminated. Rocky makes it, but doesn’t want to go without her BFF. CeCe insists that Rocky follow through with her dream and marches her to the studio – with Rocky still in her pajamas. This next segment was very Hannah Montana-esque as CeCe helped Rocky change into her dance clothes during the live show. Fortunately, the host thought more of it than [Greg] did, because instead of firing Rocky, he asked both girls to stay on the show. And that is how these two best friends ended up on TV.

This show plays upon familiar themes and is no way groundbreaking, but it’s a solid effort and is likely to become a a big hit. The star of the show, Bella Thorne, is clearly very talented and as the first of the next generation of DC stars is likely to become the next Miley – and we mean that in a good way!

ABC Family’s 10 Things was canceled last month, and the series finale ended on a cliff hanger! It sounds like the decision was primarily made in response to lower than expected ratings. Which means that a sizable fan campaign has a reasonable chance of convincing the company to continue to invest in the show.

Sonny with a Chance Filming!

As this newsletter comes to a close, we wanted to apologize for being a few days late. This has been a crazy week for Webmaster greg, which ended with an unbelievable event this past Friday night. Greg attended the filming for one of the last season two episodes of Sonny with a Chance!

My Sonny with a Chance Autographs

This was episode 222 “Sonny with a Choice” directed by Eric Dean Seaton. … don’t want to give away much on the plot. This is a episode for the overall season two storyline and it wouldn’t be fair to you all to spoil how it ends. In this episode, So Random and MacKenzie Falls are both nominated for the Tween Choice award for best Tween show, which causes some (additional) friction between the two casts. … Needless to say, people where impressed. Ezra took a moment then to mention that I had a fansite to one of the showrunners. I think it was creator Steve Marmel, but I’m not sure.

You can read more about the filming at the DC Fans Blog and discuss the show at the SWAC Forum.

Save 10 Things I Hate About You!

http://save10things.sds.me/10-things.jpg

The news broke via twitter Thursday evening that ABC Family’s 10 things has been canceled! Series Creator and Executive Producer Carter Covington tweeted on thursday: “Sad news… ABCFamily canceled the show :( Thanks 2 our AMAZING fans – U R the reason I do this! Enjoy the last 5 eps – they’re fantastic!”

It sounds like the decision was primarily made in response to lower than expected ratings. Which means that a sizable fan campaign has a reasonable chance of convincing the company to continue to invest in the show. So spread the word, and do it quickly! We need as many people as possible to write and call Disney and politely ask them to renew the show.

Save Our Seeker

The following is a message from separate group seeking to save Legend of the Seeker. They are still organizing their movement, but we wanted to do our part to spread awareness of their cause. You can connect with other Seeker fans here.

Legend of the Seeker is a Disney syndicated show that is based on The Sword of Truth fantasy novels by Terry Goodkind. On March 4, 2010 it was announced that Tribune/WGN had decided not to renew the series for a third season, but there was still a chance that the series would not be canceled. However, this past Monday, April 26, 2010, it was reported by Ausiello that Legend of the Seeker has been canceled. Despite the fact that the show had almost no promotion and an incredibly erratic airing schedule (4pm sometimes, 1am other times), it still averaged 2.5 million viewers (Nielsen ratings). The “Save Our Seeker” movement has been launched in response to the cancellation of the series.

Meaghan Martin Mania

Posted on: Saturday, January 30th, 2010 in: 10 Things I Hate About You, Meaghan Martin

First, I wanted to share this interview that Fanlala did with Meaghan Martin (and her costars Lindsey Shaw, Ethan Peck, Nicholas Braun, Dana Davis, and Larry Miller)about the new season of 10 Things I Hate About You.

Fanlala: There are 10 new episodes of “10 Things I Hate About You” that are premiering soon! What makes them so exciting?
Meaghan: I think that it’s a very exciting 10 episodes simply because of all the plot twists! I had no idea of what was coming and I’m still surprised every week when they hand us a new script! I think the writers really bring a realistic excitement to it. It’s just like living your life everyday. And a lot of it’s so relatable. The last episode we shot, I kid you not, the script reflected my life exactly! We were making jokes about it on set! I don’t want to reveal anything because I want everyone to figure it out but it’s funny to see the similarities without even talking to the writers. It’s great that we’re writing real stories for real people to watch!
Lindsey: It’s like the characters 2.0. It’s like the first season but times 20. It moves. We’re moving into love triangles. [There are] these two characters have never talked but now they’re talking and now they have this whole relationship and story line. We’re just being brought together. We’re becoming more involved with everybody.
Nicholas: The first 10 ended with Cameron being totally lost and heartbroken. He didn’t know what to do about not having Bianca as his girlfriend. He thought it was going to happen! So he’s kind of mixed up and doesn’t know what to do with himself and he’s going to have to find his way.

Fanlala: What have you all learned from your talented cast mates?
Meaghan: Larry [has] been so incredible to work with, and everybody on cast! I’m definitely the baby and definitely the one with the least amount of experience. It’s been such a blessing to come on my first TV series and learn so much from everybody. [I remember] the first episode we were shooting Lindsey, as we were exiting the house, locks the door behind her. Something that simple can make everything so realistic! I’ve learned stuff like that! I’ve learned techniques about working with your fellow actors. Larry’s very giving and he talks through the scene [with me] and he makes me feel comfortable. One of the biggest things that has been really flattering to me is he doesn’t speak to me like I’m some little 17-year-old who has no experience. He talks to me and says, “Here’s what we need to do and how do you want to do it, Meaghan? You’re an actor too. You have your opinions and your character choices.”
Larry: I’m the lucky one! The truth is, we have fun together [since] the first day we were there. I’m gracious to her not because I’m such a big sport but because that’s the only way I know how to live as an actor. “What do you think about this? What do I think about this?” I don’t see a young actor or actress in this whole cast, I see other pros who are really good! On the ride over here, I was reminding her today – and you never say this to an actor on a day when she is doing it – there were some lines. And one was in the tape that they showed. Just the rhythm that she says, “you like him, you want to kiss him.” And every time she said that, I would laugh on the set in this one episode. I learn as much from her as anyone might from me. We’re in the same show, we have parts and we like the parts and each other. It’s that simple.

Fanlala: What advice do you have for kids in high school trying to fit in and getting through those awkward times?
Dana: When I was in high school, I struggled so much to fit in and when you get older you realize, you never really fit in. Enjoy your individuality! That’s what makes you so special! I wish I could drill that into people’s heads but it takes life to learn it. But I would just say to enjoy your individuality and enjoy the fact that you’re different.
Nicholas: I cared a lot about what people thought and how to be cool and who to hang out with. The thing I like about Cameron is that doesn’t happen, really. He’s cool with being an AV nerd, professing his love for a girl. He’s just so honest, so much more honest than I was.
Lindsey: You’re going to come out of this and you’re going to think it’s really not that important, how high school was. It’s really not as drastic as you believe it to be. None of your life really is and you really start to learn that in high school, you get past that. It’s just the world that you’re in and being a part of it.
Ethan: Just don’t think about it!

Fanlala: What’s an awkward high school moment you’ve had that you can share?
Nick: I’m in freshman year of high school and I’m in the lunch line. There’s this senior girl in front of me who’s just a knockout, her name is Annie. She was just stunning and all the freshman guys were in love with her. I’m standing there and we both reach to get a cup and our cups like clink or something, it was really awkward. And I look at her and go, “Sparks are a-flyin’!” She just walked away and she turned around and just gave me this look over her shoulder like, “What?!” So that was one of my very good failed attempts at picking up a girl.

Fanlala: How do you all act towards each other behind the scenes?
Lindsey: There’s so much camaraderie on set. It’s just the feeling that we want to share around. Like we’re always hugging and complimenting each other. It just adds to the comfort.
Larry: It’s easy to care about [the cast]. Is it something like a father? In a way, absolutely! It’s easy to play the part and care about them, and I care about them in real life! [I remember] Nick [Braun] said something, Nick plays Cameron, and he said, “She’s so beautiful. I care about her so much.” And I just said to him, “That’s my daughter! Watch it!” It’s so fun, but there’s a reality there. I care about them!

Fanlala: Meaghan, you just graduated from high school! How was that for you?
Meaghan: Yes! I did just graduate in real life. It was a very exciting and freeing experience! I don’t even know how to describe it. I’m definitely going to start college as soon as I can! My plan is to go to community college and transfer to a university. So I’m kind of waiting it out and figuring out when I have a chance to really dedicate my time to classes.

For the life of me, I don’t know why ABC Family insists on making such short seasons.

Anyway, I titled this post “Meaghan Martin Mania” because I also wanted to show off my new Meaghan Martin Autograph! :)
