New Disney Channel Series: Shake It Up!

Breaking news! Disney has just picked up a new live action series scheduled to premiere this fall!

New Disney Channel Series: Shake It Up!

Which, honestly, is kinda surprising. They’re going to begin filming in July, which doesn’t give them very much time before they intend to start airing the show.

Considering Disney’s obsession with musical and performance shows, it’s no surprise they’d take an interest in a dance show. I’m just a little surprised at how brazen they are about it in this show.

Anyway, the Official Disney Press Release follows:

DISNEY CHANNEL ORDERS NEW DANCE-FILLED
BUDDY COMEDY SERIES, “SHAKE IT UP!”

Disney Channel has ordered “Shake It Up!,” a buddy comedy centered around a teen dance show, created by Chris Thompson (“Laverne and Shirley,” “Bosom Buddies,” “The Naked Truth,” “Action”) and executive-produced by Thompson and Rob Lotterstein (“The War at Home,” “Ellen”). It stars 12-year-old Bella Thorne (“Big Love”) and 13-year-old Zendaya. The multi-camera series will begin production in Hollywood, California, in July for a scheduled Fall 2010 premiere on Disney Channel. The announcement was made today by Gary Marsh, president, Entertainment, and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide.

Marsh said, “Newcomers Bella Thorne and Zendaya make for one of the most likable and engaging BFF duos we’ve ever seen. And while buddy comedies have been around since the start of television, what makes ‘Shake It Up’ unique is that this is the first time anyone has incorporated dancing into the underlying premise of a sitcom.”

The comedy series introduces two high-spirited characters, best friends CeCe Jones and Raquel “Rocky” Blue, whose dreams of becoming professional dancers are realized when they become background dancers on the most popular teen dance show, “Shake it Up, Chicago,” a gig they land thanks to their longtime and well-connected friend, Deuce. Between learning a wide range of new dance styles, navigating the backstage antics at the show (especially with their rivals, Tinka and Gunther) and their newfound social status at school, the girls are on their way to new and fun adventures, some that will test their friendship.

Starring are Bella Thorne as CeCe Jones; Zendaya as Raquel “Rocky” Blue; Kenton Duty (“Lost”) as Gunther; Adam Irigoyen (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) as Deuce; and Davis Cleveland (“Good Luck Charlie,” “Desperate Housewives”) as Flynn Jones, CeCe’s precocious younger brother. The series was created by Chris Thompson and will be executive-produced by Rob Lotterstein and Thompson. Rosero McCoy (“Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam”) choreographed the pilot episode. “Shake It Up!” is a production of It’s a Laugh Productions, Inc.

Disney Channel is a 24-hour kid-driven, family inclusive television network that taps into the world of kids and families through original series and movies. Currently available on basic cable in over 99 million U.S. homes and to millions of other viewers on Disney Channels around the world, Disney Channel is part of the Disney/ABC Television Group.

I wonder what happened to that whole Dance Dance Chicago series? I wonder if it was dropped or changed? But I reckon this series will come.

  2. dcfan says:

finally giving bella her own show.

  3. Richard says:

The cast are kinda young (- points) unlike your normal Disney shows.
Oh and Nice new DCfans banner at the top.

  4. Richard says:

  5. meiamj says:

Yes that new stylish banner is awesome :)

  6. Webmaster Greg says:

“Dance Dance Chicago”? That sounds vaguely familiar.

dcfan, should I know who this Bella chick is?

Richard, I didn’t make the banner. my friend Matthias of SaveDisneyShows.de made it for me.

  7. Bill Schlichting says:

Disney coming out with a dance show … Hmmmmmm … going after “Victorious” on Nick?

  8. meiamj says:

I can see how one would come to that conclusion and that’s what we may very well see.

  9. Matthias says:

Hi Richard, I found all the pics @ Google. Try this

If there aren’t the pics you want ask me via twitter. I saved them all :)

  10. aria says:

the show is the same as dance dance chicago. i read that it had a name change. i think it sounds really cool. i’m a dancer and would like to see a dance show.

  11. meiamj says:

Yup the series working title of Dance, Dance Chicago changed to Shake It Up! But what really is surprising is Disney working on such a tight release sch. I mean they wanna shoot this summer or in like a month and then air in like four months or so; for Disney that’s extremely fast especially for a brand new tv series such as this one.

Here’s what I thought when I heard of this show and Bella…what were her agents thinking taking her off a legit career path and turning to Disney? So I check it out on IMDB and see that the creator is a guy named Chris Thompson, he did Bosom Buddies. BB starred Tom Hanks in his first break out role…guess who produces Big Love that Bella left? Bingo…Tom Hanks. So now I wonder if it was all cosmic. Here’s to hoping for Bella’s sake that this show last for more than 2 seasons. If not, maybe she’ll follow down the path of Tom and everyone will be working for her one day.

  13. DEBBY says:

ZENDAYA IS GOING TO BE HUGE! I CAN ALREADY TELL! BELLA IS ALRIGHT BUT I HAVE SEEN ZENDAYAS ACTING/ DANCING AND BELLA FAILS IN COMPARISON. CANT WAIT TO WATCH HER IN NOVEMBER!

  14. Webmaster Greg says:

Zendaya better than Bella? ROFLOL. Whatever you say Debby.

  15. Lolly says:

I am SO excited for this show! Chris Thompson is a genius and I look forward to anything he does. Zendaya and Bella are too cute for words and I cant wait for this show to start!!!!!!! Does anybody know when the commercials start airing?

  16. Lala says:

zendaya is absolutely amazing! i know her personally from an acting class in san francisco and am very excited to watch this show in fall! i’m sure she’ll be great and i’m looking forward to seeing the combination between zendaya and bella. zendaya is the sweetest girl and i cant wait!

  17. Webmaster Greg says:

Zendaya’s a good actress. But Bella’s clearly the star. :)

  18. NAP says:

So… they’re creating a show loosely based on Selina and Demi’s childhood? haha (just poking some fun)

Let’s see how this show will roll. I’m kinda guessing this will be the first wave of next generation shows after Hannah cycles out.

  19. Webmaster Greg says:

NAP, yeah, this show is clearly supposed to be the next Hannah.

Even crazier, I think it actually will be! :)

  20. amber elvis says:

  21. Webmaster Greg says:

Amber, move to LA, find an agent, audition for everything. Good luck! :)

  22. Heather says:

I am a parent of 3 kids that love Disney channel, as well as myself….I have watched Disney since I was little. These girls are terrible dancers in comparison to the other talent that we have seen over the years. What were they thinking? Not to mention it premiers the same night as Hannah’s Final Episode…it’s like saying goodbye to a brilliant show and saying hello to a show that sparks no interest whatsoever.

  23. Webmaster Greg says:

Heather, it wasn’t Hannah’s final episode. And I would recommend you give Shake it Up a chance to prove itself. The first episode of any show is always sub-par because it has to set up the series.

  24. Oksana says:

I love this show and I just found out what zedayas last name is and it’s Coleman awesome I wish her the best and wish she was the star she’s a better dancer then Bella she’s like a stick but tries to keep up with zendaya and Bella is way way way way way TOO SKINY she grosses ne out when I watch that show thenn they put her in skinny jeans!…… YUCK!!!!!
